Dr. Eugene Hurwitz: Improving Quality of Life For Allergy Sufferers
Allergies and asthma are a major cause of illness and disability, affecting
allergic Americans from infants to seniors. Because allergies are cumulative,
building in allergic symptom severity with each successive allergen exposure,
minimizing exposure to all allergens is vital for all allergic individuals.
Fortunately, quality care from the physicians at The Center for Allergy and
Asthma of West Georgia can help allergic people to live normal lives without
incurring permanent damage to lungs or risking death from an asthma attack or
life-threatening food allergies.
Allergy symptoms are caused by too much immunity. Everyone’s system produces antibodies to fight infection. An allergic person’s system produces an allergy antibody (IgE) in response to allergens. Allergens
include substances in our environment such as pollen proteins. For an allergic
individual, an allergy antibody is a fuse that ignites an allergy bomb: allergy
cells that release histamine and other natural chemicals that cause allergic
symptoms. Histamine can be released anywhere in the allergy-prone victim’s body. Histamine released in the nose causes sneezing and a runny nose; in the
lungs causes bronchial spasms or wheezing-asthma; in the skin causes itching or
hives; in the stomach causes nausea. If histamine is released through the body,
a life-threatening allergic reaction -anaphylaxis- can be produced causing
death without immediate treatment.

Dr. Charlie Rouse Puts His Heart Into Helping Yours
Symptoms of cardiovascular trouble can be sudden and intense -crushing or
squeezing chest pain, nausea, shortness of breath and sweating- or they can be
silent and stealthy, sneaking up on you with only mild discomfort or no
symptoms at all. When your heart is on the line, you want the latest in
cutting-edge medicine and compassionate, personalized care. “Heart disease is the American disease,” says Charlie Rouse, MD, a board certified cardiologist with West Georgia
Cardiology and on staff at Tanner Health System. “Many of us are going to have to confront it, and I see a lot of people who
gamble with their cardiac health.”
Dr. Rouse is passionate about his chosen field. He is engaged in several cardiac
research programs aimed at bringing the best technology has to offer to the aid
of his patients. Concerned about the increasing number of young people whose
lives are cut short by sudden cardiac arrest, Dr. Rouse pours his heart into
educating the community through lectures and presentations in schools, at civic
club meetings, and at area businesses. He also actively purses grant monies
from organizations and pharmaceutical companies to provide education and
equipment to local schools. Courtesy of a grant by the Carrollton Kiwanis Club,
Carrollton High School now has life-saving AEDs (automatic external
defibrillators) and personnel trained to use them. For Dr. Rouse, the
development of new diagnostic and intervention procedures that help prevent
heart attacks are the most important advances in the last few years. Dr. Rouse
gives high marks to a new generation of pace makers which have, he says, taken
many patients off the transplant list, and with which he has had excellent
results. “They’ve definitely improved the quality of life for these patients,” he said.
Dr. Rouse is excited about the creation of a Tanner Health System Heart Center
in Carrollton. “Time is muscle,” says Dr. Rouse. “Every minute counts to a victim of heart disease.” The ability to have a state-of-the-art cardiac facility in the West Georgia
area is critical. Tanner is one of 10 medical facilities in Georgia selected to
perform percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty, a
service previously unavailable in our area. PCI can be used to treat stable and
unstable coronary artery disease (CAD) and to open blocked arteries during a
heart attack. The quicker a patient is able to receive relief from a blocked
artery, the more likely he will survive cardiac arrest. West Georgia Cardiology
has three locations in Bremen, Carrollton and Villa Rica. Visit Dr. Rouse at
the Villa Rica location located at 514 West Bankhead Hwy. Suite 200. Call
