Georgia Highlands College To Close New Douglasville Campus In June

(02/27/10) Only 2 months after signing a 10-year lease in Douglasville for their satellite campus, Georgia Highlands College will be closing the center in June of 2010. The school is facing what it terms "a financial crisis". Georgia Highlands President Randy Pierce was emotional as he spoke to faculty and staff gathered at a meeting Friday morning. At one point, he threw his notes to the floor in frustration. “There are people here," he said. "There is no fat. We can’t do this. We can’t let the legislature do this to us.” The meeting was to inform faculty and staff of the college's plans to respond to another $2.4 million in budget cuts required by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The cuts at Georgia Highlands are nearly one quarter of the college's entire fiscal year 2011 budget. The plans to close the Douglasville campus are only one part of a 12 point action plan that will be submitted to the Board of Regents on Saturday.

Drug Agents Make Big Bust With Douglasville Ties

(02/27/10) A multi-agency team seized over $1.6 million in a narcotics investigation that went cross-country. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, on February 17, 2010, 12 suspects in Georgia and Louisiana were arrested in connection with the trafficking of marijuana. The marijuana, with a street value of $500,000, was determined to be of a "very high grade" drug agents stated. Agents detailed other seizures of approximately $1 million in real estate, $140,000 in cash and drug assets, 10 vehicles and 50 firearms. Agents were able to determine the marijuana was grown in Mendocino, California and was transported to Douglasville through New Orleans. After it hit Douglasville, mid-level dealers would then distribute the drug throughout Atlanta and the metro area. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests and seizures are expected to be made.

Meyers Brings Home Olympic Medal

(02/26/10) Douglasville native and Olympic bobsledder Elena Meyers and teammate Erin Pac slid into a bronze medal Wednesday night. Meyers and Pac finished their four heats with a total combined time of 3 minutes and 33.40 seconds, only 1.12 seconds away from the gold medal finish time. As the brakeman, Meyers’ job was to push the bobsled during a running start and then jump in the sled and control the brakes. The Meyers/Pac team was questionable for competition earlier in the week after bobsled driver Pac injured a hamstring muscle. They were the only U.S. team out of three competing in the event to win a medal.
